WASHINGTON, D.C. – Saint Louis scored four times in the second half to roll to a 4-0 victory over George Washington Saturday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field in Washington, D.C.
Â
With the win, the Billikens (11-0-3, 7-0 A-10) clinched the Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer regular-season title. They will be the No. 1 seed for the A-10 Men's Soccer Championship, which will begin on Nov. 6 with a quarterfinal round matchup at 7 p.m. at Hermann Stadium. If the Billikens advance, Hermann Stadium would host the A-10 semifinals Nov. 12 and the A-10 final Nov. 14. One week of the regular season still remains, as SLU hosts Rhode Island next Saturday at Hermann Stadium.
Â
On Saturday, it was all Billikens in the second half.
John Klein registered three assists – tying a school record – to increase his NCAA-leading assists mark to 15.
Mason Leeth scored two goals, while
Simon Becher and
Chase Niece got the others.
Â
SLU's first two tallies came on free kicks, with Klein initiating them both. On the first, the ball found its way through the box to a sliding Leeth, who poked it over the line for the eventual game-winner.
Â
Moments later, Klein sent in a ball from the left side that Niece headed home at the far post.
Â
Kevin Komodi started the scoring play on the Billikens' third goal. After a long run up the left side, he passed to Becher in the box, who collected it and buried for his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Becher has now scored in eight straight games, the longest goal streak by a Billiken in 20 years (Dipsy Selolwane, 10 straight in 2001).
Â
It was Klein who started the play for SLU's fourth and final goal of the game. He made a run up the right side and sent it over to Leeth, who beat his man and was open to poke it over the line for the final 4-0 margin.
Â
Patrick Schulte made a pair of saves for his seventh shutout of the season.
Â
SLU has now captured the A-10 regular-season crown six times since joining the league in 2005 (2005-co, 2006, 2007, 2013, 2016, 2021). The Billikens have won two A-10 tournament titles in their history – 2009 and 2012.
Â
Saint Louis concludes the regular season next Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Hermann Stadium versus Rhode Island.
