ST. LOUIS –
John Klein scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season in the first 16 minutes to give Saint Louis the upper hand, and the 10th-seeded Billikens went on to register a 5-1 NCAA Championship second-round victory over LIU Sunday afternoon before a Robert R. Hermann Stadium record crowd of 6,815.
Â
The win propels SLU (15-0-4), the only undefeated NCAA Division I men's soccer team this season, to the round of 16. The Billikens will face 7th-seeded Duke -- a 2-1 second-round winner over UCLA -- Saturday, Nov. 27, at 6 p.m. Central in Durham, North Carolina.
Â
LIU, champion of the Northeast Conference, finished with a 12-5-4 record. The Sharks advanced to Sunday's second round with a 1-0 win at Maryland.
Â
Klein gave Saint Louis the lead in the fourth minute, taking a long pass from
Chandler Vaughn and outmaneuvering an LIU defender and the Sharks' goalkeeper from close range. The assist was Vaughn's second of the season.
Â
Klein doubled the lead just over 12 minutes later.
A.J. Palazzolo began the play by eluding two opponents and tapping the ball to
Isaiah Parker. Parker lofted a pass to Klein, who beat the keeper with a flying header. Parker tallied his seventh assist of the year, while Palazzolo picked up his first.
Â
Christian Buendia made it 3-0 in the 21st minute with his second goal of the season.
Simon Becher flashed into the box, settled the ball and dropped it off to Buendia, who tucked a shot just inside the left post. Becher's assist was his ninth of the season.
Â
Robert Winkler scored LIU's only goal, unassisted, in the 23rd minute.
Â
The Bills quickly regained their three-goal cushion in the second half, scoring in the 47th minute. Becher received a booming ball from goalkeeper
Patrick Schulte, outraced an LIU defender and rolled his team-leading 13th goal past a drawn-out goalkeeper. Schulte collected his first assist of the year.
Â
Palazzolo finished the scoring in the 70th minute, notching his third marker of the year. A Saint Louis corner kick was headed out by LIU directly to Palazzolo, who buried a shot into the upper left from 20 yards out.
Â
The Billikens outshot the Sharks 11-7 overall and 8-2 in shots on goal. SLU also earned a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
