DURHAM, N.C. – Saint Louis earned its first trip to the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinals in 18 years by knocking off Duke 4-3 Saturday night at Koskinen Stadium.
Â
The 10th-seeded Billikens remained undefeated, improving to 16-0-4. They will face No. 2 seed Washington (16-1-2), which edged Indiana 3-2 in overtime Saturday afternoon, next weekend. The Billikens and Huskies will meet for a fifth time overall and first time since 2009.
Â
Duke, the No. 7 seed, finished 14-5-1.
Â
Saint Louis owned a 3-1 lead following goals by
John Klein and
Simon Becher in the 58th minute and 64th minute, respectively. Duke pulled even, however, with tallies in the 74th minute and 77th minute.
Â
The Billikens earned the sixth of their eight corner kicks just moments after the Blue Devils equalized, and it paid off handsomely.
Â
Isaiah Parker's service was headed toward the goal by Becher. Duke goalkeeper Eliot Hamill made the save, but he gave a rebound that was deflected by a nearby teammate into the net for an own goal and a 4-3 SLU advantage at the 78:06 mark.
Â
The Billikens limited the Blue Devils to two shots, neither on goal, the rest of the way.
Â
SLU took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when
Mason Leeth took a long pass from
Christian Buendia and drilled a shot past Hamill. It was Leeth's fourth goal of the season and Buendia's second assist.
Â
The Billikens maintained the edge until the 54th minute when Thorleifur Ulfarsson equalized for Duke.
Â
Saint Louis quickly regained the lead. After a Duke pass in the midfield was deflected deep into SLU's attacking end, Becher raced to retrieve the ball on the left flank and delivered a perfect cross to Klein, who beat Hamill's challenge. Klein notched his seventh goal, while Becher collected his 10th assist.
Â
The Bills made it 3-1 when Becher narrowly beat a charging Hamill to the ball and tapped it past a sliding Duke defender. It was Becher's team-leading 14th goal of the season;
Alex Shterenberg and
Seth Anderson picked up their third and first assists of the year, respectively.
Â
Patrick Schulte made four saves, including three in the second half.
Â
Saint Louis has scored four or more goals in back-to-back NCAA tournament games for the first time since 1967. The Billikens defeated LIU 5-1 in this year's second round a week ago.
