Billikens Fall in Final Seconds at VCU, 67-65

RICHMOND, Va. – VCU hit a pair of free throws with 4.7 seconds remaining as the Rams upended the Billikens, 67-65, on Tuesday night at the Siegel Center.

The Billikens fell to 11-5 overall and 4-4 in the Atlantic 10. VCU improved to 17-5 overall and 10-3 in the league.

Hasahn French turned in his best game of the year, scoring a season-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. He also collected eight rebounds and blocked two shots.

Jordan Goodwin had another double-double (16 points and 12 rebounds), his 12th of the season and 35th of his career.

Javonte Perkins turned in 16 points and seven rebounds. Gibson Jimerson hit a pair of first-half treys to finish with six points.

The Billikens won the battle on the boards 43-28.

It was a fairly even first half, with VCU pulling away late to take a four-point lead into halftime, 33-29.

VCU stretched its lead to eight points early in the second half before the Billikens seniors – French, Goodwin and Perkins – combined for a 13-0 Billiken run to put SLU ahead.

It was a one possession game for the final 14:22, with numerous lead changes the rest of the way.

Goodwin put the Billikens ahead 65-63 with a minute left with a jumper. The Rams' Ace Baldwin tied it up with a pair of free throws with 50 ticks left.

The deciding play of the game came as VCU had the ball with the shot clock turned off. Baldwin drove to the left, but Yuri Collins was whistled for a foul. Baldwin hit both free throws, and Perkins' half-court heave at the buzzer was off the mark allowing VCU to escape with the victory.

Saint Louis returns to action on Friday, Feb. 26, when it hosts Richmond at Chaifetz Arena. Game time is 6 p.m., and it will be televised on ESPN2.
