Late-Inning Rallies Push Billikens Past GW in DH Opener

THE BASICS
•Saint Louis overcame a four-run deficit in the late innings and defeated George Washington 7-5 in game 1 of an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader Saturday at the Billiken Sports Center.
•George Washington, whose loss in the opener was its first in 13 conference games, won the nightcap 9-2.
 
GAME 1 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•George Washington led 4-0 after scoring a run in the first and three in the third.
•Gabbie Kowalik's two-out RBI double in the SLU third made it 4-1.
•The Colonials re-established their four-run advantage with a run in the fifth.
•The Billikens crept closer by scoring two runs in their half of the fifth, both with two outs. Kowalik's triple plated the first, and Alyssa Chavez doubled in the second.
•Saint Louis erupted for four runs in a decisive sixth inning. Allie Herron's two-run home run, her first of the season, tied it 5-5. Sadie Wise put the Bills on top 6-5 with a sacrifice fly, and Kowalik added insurance with a two-out RBI single.
•GW had the tying runs on base with nobody out in the seventh, but reliever Aubrey Hacke worked out of the jam to record her first save of the season.
 
GAME 1 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Wise, Kristi Stevenson, Jocelyn Abbott and Maria Connell had a single apiece.
•Chloe Wendling pitched the first six innings and collected her team-leading eighth win. Wendling struck out three and walked only one.
 
GAME 2 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•George Washington tallied seven runs in the fourth to break open a scoreless game.
•Connell recorded an RBI double in the fifth to put the Billikens on the board.
•GW tacked on two runs in the sixth.
•Stevenson's RBI single in the Billiken sixth closed out the scoring.
 
GAME 2 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Kowalik, Herron and Kat Lane registered a single apiece.

The Billikens and Colonials conclude the series with a doubleheader on Sunday that begins at 11:30 a.m.
