ST. LOUIS — Six Billikens posted double-digit points, Brooke Flowers and Julia Martinez registered double-doubles and Saint Louis knocked off Southern Illinois, 82-54, Wednesday afternoon at Chaifetz Arena.
The Billikens outscored the Salukis 50-23 in the second half to help boost the team to a 4-11 mark in nonconference play. SIU moved to 3-6 on the season.
"Obviously, an important win after a grueling nonconference schedule for us," head coach Rebecca Tillett said. "I thought our women took the opportunity over the exam break to really grow in that time.
"Just really excited with the big improvements, in terms of rebounding, the six in double figures, Brooke and Julia's double-doubles and I thought Kennedy Calhoun really managed the game well," Tillett said. "Really excited for our women."
Flowers finished with 13 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks for the 31st double-double of her career and fourth game this season with at least seven blocked shots.
"I think one of the best things I can do is be a helper in the paint," Flowers said. "I try to do that every possession if I can, and I think it worked well this game."
Martinez's double-double was the fourth of her career. She posted 16 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and three assists. She credited her success in the game to the coaches pushing her to have fun.Â
"If one person smiles, it's definitely contagious," Martinez said. "To find joy within the game in different possessions definitely makes a big difference."
Kyla McMakin collected a game-best 19 points and led six Billikens in double figures. It was the first time six Billikens each had 10+ points since November 28, 2014, against Mercer.
Calhoun recorded 10 points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals, while Mia Nicastro and Peyton Kennedy each tallied 12 points. Nicastro added six boards and Kennedy registered five.
The Billikens held a one-point advantage at the half, leading the Salukis 32-31. SLU then took over the game in the second half, outscoring SIU 50-23.
SLU will begin Atlantic 10 Conference play Dec. 28 against Loyola Chicago at Chaifetz Arena.
