ST. LOUIS – Behind a dominant fourth quarter, the Saint Louis women's basketball team defeated the Missouri Tigers, 93-85, for the second time in school history here Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Billikens outscored the Tigers 36-21 in the fourth quarter, erasing a seven-point deficit in the final 10 minutes. The victory marks not only the second time the Billikens have gotten the edge against the in-state foe, but the most points scored against them, as well.
Â
In the opening seven seconds the crowd at Chaifetz Arena got a glimpse of the game to come, as the Billikens won the opening tip and
Peyton Kennedy drove to the basket, marking the first points of the day.Â
Â
Mizzou soon found its footing, though, hitting two shots from behind the arc to take and extend the Tigers' lead to seven. At the first media timeout, the Billikens' in-state opponent led, 14-7, while shooting 54 percent from the floor. Out of the timeout, SLU punched back, as Camreé Clegg scored the first of her day's 22 points off a Mizzou turnover before draining a three-pointer. The Billikens pulled within one (19-18) but the Tigers connected on a three-pointer of their own to extend their lead to four.
Â
The Billikens came out firing on all cylinders at the start of the second period, scoring six unanswered points to take their second lead of the day, but the visiting Tigers used a 6-0 run of their own to re-take the lead. Back-to-back three-pointers from Kennedy helped cancel out the damage, giving the narrow advantage back to the home team. From there, the teams traded shots and turnovers before
Brooklyn Gray, continuing her strong start to her Billiken career, extended the Billikens' lead to four points (43-39) heading into the break.
Â
Coming out of the locker rooms, Mizzou went on the attack tying up the game at 47, apiece by the first media timeout. The Tigers continued their strong offensive play, going on a 10-0 run in the opening minutes of the second half. With Mizzou's fifth foul called sending the Billikens into the bonus, SLU pulled within four (59-54), but the Tigers' ninth three-pointer of the day at the buzzer, gave them the 64-57 lead at the end of the third quarter.Â
Â
Facing a seven-point deficit heading into the final period, the Billikens gave up two threes early in the opening minutes, but two 7-0 runs helped propel the SLU past the undefeated Tigers, with the second giving the home team the 78-77 advantage. Seconds later, Kennedy drained her third three-pointer of the night, before wrestling away a steal on the other end of the floor. A jumper from
Kyla McMakin and a combined 11 made free throws from her, Clegg and Gray helped ice the game, giving SLU the 93-85 win while handing Mizzou its first loss of the season.Â
Â
SLU shot 50 percent from the floor and 53 percent from the three-point line in its second game of the season with 44 of the Billikens' 93 points coming in the paint. The team's both pulled down 35 rebounds with
Tierra Simon grabbing a team-high seven boards.Â
Â
Four Billikens scored in double figures with Gray and Clegg leading the way with 22 apiece, Kennedy scoring 21 and McMakin contributing 15. Â
Â
SLU will be back in action hosting the team's second in-state opponent of the season, Missouri State, Wednesday night. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m.
