LAIE, Hawai'i – The Saint Louis University women's basketball team put up the most points in school history Saturday afternoon, racing to a 109-63 win over Chaminade.
The game Saturday afternoon was the team's first of a three-game excursion to Laie, Hawai'i, and the win moves the Billikens to 3-1 on the season.Â
The Billikens made light work of the local Silverswords in the first quarter. Helped by three-pointers from Peyton Kennedy and Brooklyn Gray, SLU jumped out to an early 16-6 lead at the first media timeout shooting over 40 percent from the floor. The Billikens only allowed six points in the final five minutes of the first quarter, and held a 24-12 advantage at the end of the opening 10 minutes.
SLU continued to keep its foot on the gas into the second period, going 6-6 from the floor to start. The Billikens matched their point total from the first quarter, piling on 24 more points with Kyla McMakin leading the way with 15 through the first two quarters. At the end of the first half, the Billikens led 48-29 while pulling down 31 rebounds and grabbing five steals.Â
Coming out of the locker rooms the Swords showed some life scoring on two of their four first possessions. But the Billikens answered with a 9-0 run to end the quarter, highlighted by makes from Mia Nicastro, Ashleigh Connor, Bri Johns and Marcavia Shavers. The Swords called a timeout and the Billikens carried an 80-46 advantage with them into the fourth quarter.Â
Despite giving up the first points of the fourth quarter, a three-pointer from Kennedy off an assist from Gray got things started for the Billikens in the final period. Minutes later, Kennedy sank her fourth of the day from behind the arc, to extend the Billiken's lead to 90-52.
SLU kept its food on the gas in the final minutes, as Nicastro, scoring a season-high 10 points, got the team to the century mark. Connor, who scored 11 off the bench, helped make history for the Billikens, draining a three-pointer to eclipse the most points in a single game – a record set against Davidson in 2016.
McMakin led the team with 19 points, while Kennedy's 16 mark the pair's fourth-straight game in double figures. Simon pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, helping SLU out-rebound the Silverswords, 66-21. The Houston, Texas, native also recorded four of the team's six blocks.Â
The Billikens will be back in action against Wake Forest on Monday, taking on the Demon Deacons in their first matchup of the North Shore Showcase. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT (3 p.m. local time).Â
