Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Billikens Shoot Program-Best from Floor, Defeat UIC in Fourth-Quarter Thriller

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University women's basketball shot a program-best 61.2 percent from the field here Sunday afternoon, en route to a 79-75 victory over UIC in a fourth-quarter thriller.

The Billikens' 30-49 from the field was behind a perfect 12-12 game from Peyton Kennedy, who not only put up a career-high 29 points, but eclipsed the former school record of 10-10, last reached in Jan. 2000, and marks the top performance in the NCAA this season.

SLU won the opening tip before the games' first turnover plagued the home team early. The Billikens and Flames traded notches in the category, and went into the locker rooms with a combined 26 total turnovers. Despite the giveaways, the Billikens shot 56 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes while UIC sat at 50 percent heading into the break which saw the teams deadlocked at 33 apeice at Chaifetz Arena.

Out of the break, UIC took advantage of an early Billiken turnover, and raced out to a 46-35 lead off an 11-0 run. The momentum was stopped short by Kennedy, who scored a driving layup to bring the deficit back to single digits. Scores from Kyla McMakin and Marcavia Shavers helped extend the Billikens' run to six points, before two points from the charity stripe from the visitors slowed SLU's momentum. The Billikens' much-needed spark came from Brooklyn Gray, who made four-straight from the field to bring them within three headed into the final period.

Tasked with outscoring their opponent in the fourth quarter once again, the Billikens answered the call, going 7-11 from the floor and 11-12 from the charity stripe in the final period to help boost themselves over the one-loss Flames. The fourth-quarter comeback is the team's third of the season, outscoring opponents by 39 total points through its three of its four victories.

Kennedy's 29 points led all scorers while Gray and McMakin added 16 and 12, respectively. The Billikens held the advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Flames, 28-19, with Marcavia Shavers pulling down a team-high six boards.

The win ends a two-game losing skid for the Billikens, who now move to 4-3 on the year and 3-1 on their home court.

SLU will be back in action at Wichita State Friday evening, facing the Shockers at Charles Koch Arena. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
