Billikens Suffer Loss to Phoenix in Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Saint Louis University women's basketball suffered a setback on the road Saturday evening, falling to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 87-54, at the Kress Events Center.

The loss is the Billikens second straight and fourth in their last five, moving the team to 0-3 in true road contests this season and 5-7 overall.

It was all Green Bay in the first quarter of play at the Kress Events Center, as the Phoenix went on a 14-0 run to take a commanding 16-2 lead early in the first half. Julia Martinez scored a tough basket to end the opening period before following up her points in the paint with a block on the other end of the floor to bring the score to 25-8.

Two additional scores from Martinez and one from Kennedy Calhoun to open the second period, briefly gave the Billikens the momentum, before giving up a basket on the other end. Tierra Simon hit her first three of the day but similar to the previous sequence, SLU's defense faltered, as the Phoenix knocked down one of their own. Heading into the locker rooms at the break, the Billikens sat in their largest deficit of the day, trailing 43-19.

Green Bay came out quick in the second half, putting up a jumper to extend its lead to 26 points. The Billikens responded, though, finding Calhoun and Simon for back-to-back threes, but the Phoenix found a response of their own, going on a 10-0 run to erase the Billikens push. Brooklyn Gray helped the Billikens get back in the scoring column, putting up seven of the Billikens' highest quarter point total (19).

Trailing 68-38 heading into the final period, the Billikens' struggles on both sides of the ball persisted through the closing 10 minutes as they gave up their second-highest field goal percentage of the season (54.5) while putting up their lowest point total of the year (54).

Kyla McMakin scored 11 for the Billikens while off the bench and all coming in the second half, Gray put up 10 of her own as only the second player to hit double-digits. For the second-straight game, the Billikens top rebounder only pulled down five.

Despite the loss, Martinez surpassed 600 career points and 400 career assists in the contest while scoring nine and assisting five against the Phoenix.

The Billikens will get two days off before concluding their non-conference slate at Illinois State Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. SLU will then be out of action until Dec. 30, when the Billikens host Rhode Island to open Atlantic 10 play.
