ST. LOUIS –
Brooke Flowers registered the first triple-double in Saint Louis women's basketball history and broke two Billiken blocked shots records in SLU's 68-56 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over George Mason Wednesday before an Education Day crowd of 7,582 at Chaifetz Arena.
Â
Flowers scored 10 points – the final two coming on a bucket with just seconds left in the game – grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds and tallied a school-record 11 blocks, which also are the most rejections by an NCAA Division I women's player this season. She and Cameron Brink (16 points, 11 rebounds, 10 blocks vs. Oregon on Jan. 29) of the Stanford women's team are the only Division I players, women or men, with a points/rebounds/blocks triple-double this season.
Â
Flowers also established a Saint Louis single-season blocks record. She lifted her total to 96, topping the previous record of 90 set by Arlene Lampe in the 1984-85 campaign.
Â
Kyla McMakin scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds and
Julia Martinez recorded 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Billikens, who have won consecutive games for the first time this season. Martinez moved into fifth place on SLU's career steals chart with 157.
Â
Peyton Kennedy and
Mia Nicastro chipped in nine and eight points, respectively, and pulled down six rebounds apiece, and
Kennedy Calhoun had four assists.
Â
The Billiken advantage was a narrow six points, 51-45, with 4:38 remaining in the fourth quarter. But a 9-0 run featuring a McMakin 3-pointer and a Martinez three-point play stretched the lead to 60-45 at the 1:57 mark, and the margin remained in double digits the rest of the way.
Â
Saint Louis led 14-4 after one quarter. George Mason chipped away in the second stanza and took its only lead of the game, 23-22, with 1:46 left.
Â
But McMakin's basket just 20 seconds later put SLU back in front, and the Billikens took a 28-26 edge into intermission.
Â
George Mason hung around and trailed 37-35 with 4:42 to play in the third quarter. Saint Louis gained a little breathing room, however, with a 10-4 run fueled by six McMakin points, and it was 47-39 at the buzzer.
Â
The Billikens play at St. Bonaventure Sunday, Feb. 5, at noon Central.
