Clegg's Hot Shooting Leads Billikens Past Dayton, 74-65

DAYTON, Ohio – Camree Clegg scored a game-high-tying and season-high-tying 20 points on the strength of a career-best six 3-pointers, and Saint Louis rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to claim a fourth straight victory, 74-65 over Dayton Wednesday at UD Arena.

The Billikens improved to 6-5 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and 10-16 overall. SLU is in sole possession of sixth place in the A-10, pending the outcome of Wednesday night's games.

"It was a really great response by our women in the fourth quarter," SLU head coach Rebecca Tillett said. "We stayed in it and made the adjustments we needed to make. It was a gutsy effort by Dayton, they are suffering some major adversity right now and they really rallied as a unit in front of a great crowd."

Saint Louis swept the season series with Dayton for just the second time, joining the 2015-16 Billikens.

Clegg was 6-of-10 from beyond the arc, nailing three treys in each half. She also drew a big charge to shift momentum in the third quarter.

"All the credit goes to my teammates for finding me," Clegg said. "They got the ball to me and I was able to knock down some shots. I want to provide energy to the team, and I know that taking charges can create big momentum shifts."

Julia Martinez tallied 13 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals. She set a Saint Louis single-season record for steals – she now has 90 – and moved into fourth place on the Billikens' career steals chart with 166.

"It is special," Martinez said when asked about the steals record. "I wanted to come into this season with a new mindset and my main focus was to have success with this team. To be able to do this for Saint Louis University and with my teammates it is just really special."

Peyton Kennedy tossed in 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds (five offensive) and dished a career-high four assists. Brooke Flowers collected nine rebounds and eight blocked shots.

SLU committed a season-low 11 turnovers while forcing Dayton into 22 miscues, leading to a 19-9 advantage in points off turnovers for the Billikens. Saint Louis was 11-of-12 from the foul line, including 6-of-6 in the closing seconds to ice the game.

"That is what teams who want to be good in the postseason do," Tillett said. "Number one, you want to get better. Two, you don't get tired. And three, you improve critical areas. For us, those critical areas are to reduce turnovers and we have to defend. In the second half today, we defended."

The Billikens led 41-34 at halftime and 53-50 after three quarters. Dayton scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to go on top 57-53, and the Flyers led 61-56 with 6:31 remaining.

Baskets by Kennedy, Clegg and Flowers put SLU in front 62-61. Dayton scored on its next two possessions to grab a 65-62 edge at the 2:35 mark, but that was the end of the Flyers' scoring.

Flowers scored a second-chance bucket to make it a one-point game, and Martinez tied it with a free throw. Clegg drained her sixth and final triple from the corner for a 68-65 SLU lead, followed by two Kennedy free throws and four more by Kennedy Calhoun.

After an 11-3 run gave the Billikens a 20-11 lead late in the first quarter, Dayton scored the last five points to close the gap to 20-16 at the buzzer.

A Clegg 3-pointer put the SLU advantage into double figures for the first time, 30-20, with 5:39 left in the second quarter. The Bills led by 10 on two other occasions before three late Dayton free throws created a halftime score of 41-34.

In the third quarter, the Flyers drew to within two, 48-46, with 2:48 to play. Dayton had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead, but Calhoun made a backcourt steal and a layup and Clegg followed a Dayton miss with another trey to put Saint Louis ahead 53-46. Dayton scored the last four points of the period to begin an 11-0 run that continued into the fourth quarter.

Saint Louis returns home to host George Washington Saturday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Billikens' annual Pink Game to raise cancer awareness.
