Billikens Are Top Seed for A-10 Championship

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Regular-season champion Saint Louis (29-23, 20-5 A-10) is the No. 1 seed for the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Championship and will begin tournament play Thursday, May 11, at 11 a.m. Central against the winner of Wednesday's first-round matchup between No. 4 George Mason (31-21, 16-10) and No. 5 Fordham (20-26, 11-10).
 
The six-team double-elimination tournament, the winner of which receives the A-10's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, will be played at Fordham's Bahoshy Field in The Bronx, New York.
 
Saint Louis and A-10 newcomer Loyola Chicago (24-21, 18-6), which finished second in the league standings, earned first-round byes. Following SLU's game Thursday, the Ramblers face the winner of Wednesday's first-round contest between No. 3 Dayton (33-18, 15-7) and No. 6 Rhode Island (22-29-1, 12-13).
 
Saint Louis was 11-3 vs. the tournament field in regular-season play. The Billikens won both games of a doubleheader vs. Loyola Chicago, swept three-game series vs. George Mason and Fordham, won two of three vs. Rhode Island and lost two of three vs. Dayton.
 
SLU is seeking its first A-10 Championship crown and first NCAA Championship appearance after claiming its first regular-season conference title. Winners in 14 of their last 15 games, the Billikens set school records for most conference victories, best conference winning percentage, longest overall winning streak (12 games) and longest A-10 regular-season winning streak (11 games).
 
Tournament play continues through Saturday, with the championship game slated for 11 a.m. Central. If a second game is necessary, it will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
