Billikens Grind out Five-Set Win Over Kansas City to End Non-Conference Play

KANSAS CITY – After dropping the first two matches of their final non-conference tournament, the Saint Louis University volleyball team rallied to win in five sets over tournament host, Kansas City, Saturday afternoon.

It was all Billikens in the first two sets against the home town Roos, as SLU answered everything Kansas City  gave them.

After going down 5-1 to begin set one, the Billikens scored six unanswered to tie the set. SLU finished the opening set, 25-23, on back-to-back kills from Emily Henken

The Billikens rode their momentum into set two, swinging .382 and compiling 17 kills to muscle out the 25-22 win.

Sets three and four swung in favor of the Roos, as the Billikens struggled on both sides of the ball. The Roos forced a fifth set by earning a win in the third (25-23) and the fourth (25-11).

The fifth set was a back-and-forth affair as the Billikens and Roos traded kills and service errors. SLU muscled out the fifth set (15-13) and match (3-2), though, defeating the tournament host to move to 7-5 on the year.

Jillian Mattingly led the Billikens with a season-high 19 kills while Delaney Rice added 17 of her own. Carlie Rodgers spear headed the team's defensive efforts with 24 digs. Her performance landed her on the All-Tournament team.

The Billikens return home next weekend for the first time this season to open up their conference slate. The home-and-home matches against VCU will kick off on Friday night at 6 p.m. in Chaifetz Pavilion.
