Billikens Earn Double-Digit Road Victory Over George Washington

WASHINGTON DC – Saint Louis University women's basketball dominated George Washington Saturday afternoon, defeating the Revolutionaries 66-56 on the road.

The Billikens shot 48 percent from the floor in the victory with Kyla McMakin's 21 points, making her the 35th all-time career scorer in the NCAA passing Oregon's legendary Sabrina Ionescu.

The win moves the Billikens to 8-12 overall and 3-4 in Atlantic-10 Conference play.

Saint Louis and George Washington traded baskets to start, with the Revolutionaries holding the narrow 8-6 advantage in the early minutes before Kennedy's first three-pointer of the day sparked a 7-0 run for the Billikens. Leading 13-8, the Billikens finished out their strong opening quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 19-10 lead.

The visiting Billikens continued to exert their dominance in the second period at the Charles E. Smith Center, helped by Kennedy's 14th point of the day and Marcavia Shavers reaching double-digits as well. Despite a three-minute scoring drought, SLU flexed on the defensive side of the ball, piling up its defensive stops as Tierra Simon registered three straight blocks to keep the Revolutionaries at bay. McMakin helped end the drought for the Billikens scoring four-straight points to send the Billikens into the break leading by 17 on 56 percent shooting.

After shooting only 25 percent from the floor in the first half, George Washington showed life out of the locker room going on a 10-0 run to pull within five points. McMakin ended the run helping the Billikens regain their offensive prowess. Another stop to end the quarter sent SLU into the final period leading by 11.

The Billikens kept their foot on the gas in last 10 minutes of play with a feed from Julia Martinez to Simon in the paint to match the team's largest lead of the day, putting them up by 17 points. Kennedy scored her 20th point of the day soon after, marking her sixth game of the 2023-24 season putting up 20 points. The Revolutionaries drained a three as seconds expired pulling within 10 points, but the Billikens secured the double-digit road victory allowing their second-fewest points this season.

Joining the Billikens in double-digit scoring was Shavers with 12 points while Martinez's nine assists and four steals benefited the team's confident offensive performance. On the defensive front, Simon helped the team's efforts, registering four blocks, two steals and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Billikens get a full week off before they are back in action at home against Richmond. Tip-off against the Spiders is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28.
