SLU’s Sharpshooting Dominates Dayton on the Road

DAYTON, Ohio – Propelled by a 21-3 run to end the first half, Saint Louis University women's basketball raced to an 87-61 win over Dayton here Wednesday night to move to 9-13 on the year and 4-5 in Atlantic 10 Conference play.

The victory saw the Billikens tie the program record with their 13 three pointers marking the team's most from beyond the arc this season.

SLU and Dayton appeared evenly matched through the opening sequences as Kyla McMakin and Marcavia Shavers helped tie the game at four apiece with the Flyers early in the first quarter. Out of the first media timeout, the Billikens went on their first run of the teams' second matchup of the season scoring four-straight points to preview what was to come.

Camreé Clegg scored her first points of the night to kick off the second quarter, boosting the Billikens to a 19-9 lead. After Dayton scored off a SLU turnover, Clegg drew a charge to shift the momentum back to the visitors. From there, it was all Billikens, as Peyton Kennedy sparked the run for the Billikens, scoring her first three of the night to give them an 11-point lead and to force a Dayton timeout. The break didn't slow the Billikens momentum, as a two from Shavers was followed promptly by a three from Julia Martinez

The Billikens continued to suffocate the Flyers' attempts to find a rhythm, holding them to 17 percent shooting from the floor while on the offensive front, found one of their own. SLU ended the first half on a 21-3 run to take a 40-14 lead into the break.

It was more of the same as the second half became a three-point shooting contest with the Billikens competing against themselves as Kennedy Calhoun, Kennedy and McMakin all drained buckets from beyond the arc to give SLU the 54-21. Mia Nicastro helped the Billikens keep the momentum in their favor, coming off the bench and scoring on back-to-back possessions while pulling down three of the Billikens' 38 total rebounds.

The fourth quarter was more of an evenly-matched affair, as the Flyers hit a three early into in period. The Billikens answered back, before a 9-0 for the home team gave UD Arena some life. Brooklyn Gray's second three-pointer of the night not only ended the run, but tied the team's program-record for most made threes (13) all while boosting her into double figures.

The Billikens' 26-point win marked their largest margin of victory over the Flyers, most recently set in 2005 when the team won by 20 points.

SLU's defensive efforts could not be matched by the Flyers as the Billikens held them to 35 percent from the floor, the poorest shooting performance by any of SLU's Division I opponents this season. The Billikens, led by Martinez's and Kennedys seven apiece, not only registered 38 rebounds, but forced 23 turnovers, turning them into 28 points.

McMakin led all scorers with 26 points including 4-of-8 from three, while Kennedy (15) and Gray (10) reached double figures as well.

The Billikens finish off their two-game road trip at Richmond on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. (CST).
