ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Saint Louis fell in a heartbreaker on Friday as Davidson defeated the Billikens 3-2 in Atlantic 10 Conference field hockey action at the SLU Field Hockey Complex.
The Billikens dip to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in A-10 play, while Davidson improves to 5-6 and 1-3 in the league.
It was Senior Day on Friday as the Billikens recognized Josefina Perez, Savina Purewal, Julia Rooijakkers, Anna Smith and Olivia Smith.
Both teams scored in the first quarter. Davidson got on the board first in the sixth minute when Abby Pompeo scored to make it 1-0 Wildcats.
The Bills answered a little more than a minute later. Olivia Smith sent in a shot that deflected in the air. Josefina Perez was stationed near the goal line and tapped it in for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Pompeo would score again before halftime to send Davidson into the break leading 2-1.
The Wildcats tacked on another in the third quarter on a goal by Hannah Merritt, making it 3-1 Wildcats.
SLU got one back in the fourth quarter when Abby Vidas scored off assists by Anna Smith and Olivia Smith, cutting the Davidson lead to 3-2.
The Bills continued to press in the fourth quarter, outshooting the Wildcats 4-0 and out-cornering them 5-0 in the final frame. But the Bills were unable to get another one in, and the Wildcats escaped with the 3-2 win.
SLU freshman goalie Abby Schalow made 10 saves for the Bills.
The Billikens return to action next week when they travel to face VCU in Richmond, Virginia.
