Billikens Race to Road Win Over La Salle Behind Triple-Double from Martinez

PHILADELPHIA – Behind Julia Martinez's triple double, the Saint Louis University women's basketball team earned a road win here Wednesday evening, defeating La Salle, 78-57.

Martinez's 11 rebounds, 10 points and 10 assists marked the second triple-double of her career, and the Billikens first of the season.

SLU found itself in an early deficit in Tom Gola Arena, as the Explorers jumped out to a 7-0 lead while the Billikens committed three turnovers. Peyton Kennedy got the scoring started in SLU's final regular-season road game, with her 51st three-pointer of the season getting the Billikens on the board. As time expired in the first 10-minute period, Martinez made a layup to pull the Billikens within one, 21-20.

Taking their narrow lead into the second quarter, the Explorers' advantage didn't last long as Kennedy scored five-straight points to give SLU its first lead of the day. The Billikens continued to turn up the heat on their offense scoring 14-straight points to take a 41-27 lead into the half.

SLU's offensive production lagged early in the second half, while the Explorers made three-straight field goals from the floor. Kyla McMakin got things rolling for the Billikens again, scoring her ninth point of the day off of Julia Martinez's sixth assist. Tierra Simon helped the Billikens stay in the scoring column, recording her 12th point of the day to match her career high. Despite giving up four from beyond the arc, the Billikens maintained a 13-point advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Billikens limited the home team to 10 points in the fourth quarter, while putting up 18 of their own as they solidified 44.6 percent shooting from the floor for the game. Five Billikens reached double figures as Simon's career-high 16 points was accompanied by a team-high 12 rebounds marking the first double-double of her career.

On the defensive side of the ball, SLU grabbed its third-most rebounds of the season with 47 and held La Salle to a season-low in opponent field goal percentage (31.8 percent).

Senior Day at Chiafetz arena will conclude the Billikens' regular season, when they host Davidson on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
