Billikens Earn Walk-Off Win Over Rhode Island to Open A-10 Play

ST. LOUIS - Patrick Clohisy saved his best hit for last Thursday afternoon, hitting a walk-off RBI single to boost Saint Louis University baseball over Rhode Island, 3-2, in the team's Atlantic 10 Conference Opener.

Leading the Billikens with 41 hits on the year, the junior outfielder came up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with the score knotted at two apiece. Blasting a ball up the middle, Clohisy drove Easton Richter across home plate to move SLU to 17-6 overall and 1-0 in A-10 play.

It was a pitcher's duel at the Billiken Sports Center as SLU's Jackson Holmes and Rhode Island's Evan Maloney each pitched six complete innings only allowing one run apiece, the Billikens' driven in by Cole Smith. Heading into the seven inning, the Billikens gave up a double, boosting their visitors to a 2-1 lead with one out. In relief, Evan Bell went to work on the mound, sitting down the next two batters to get SLU out of the inning with minimal damage.

Offensively, Clohisy had the answer at the plate, driving in his first RBI of the day in the bottom of the seventh as Richter crossed home plate to even up the score at 2-2. Clohisy followed up his first hit with an equally important one, walking off the game for the Billikens in the ninth.

Clohisy's four hits led SLU in the conference opener while Richter tallied three and Tyler Fogarty and Drew Winters each accounted for two of the Billikens' 12 total.

SLU will be back in action tomorrow to continue its series against the Rams. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
