Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Billikens Season Ends in A-10 Semifinals as Second-Half Comeback Falls Short

HENRICO, Va. – Saint Louis University women's basketball's season came to an end here Saturday, falling to Rhode Island 68-62 in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.

Similar to their upset win over No.2-seeded VCU Friday night, the Billikens matchup with sixth-seeded Rhode Island came down to the final seconds, but despite pulling within two points late in the game, they could not muscle out the win over the Rams.

It was a tale of two halves in the Henrico Sports & Events Center as the Billikens struggled to find a rhythm early in the game after a teammate suffered a game-ending injury. Rhode Island, shooting 57 percent in the opening 20 minutes, ended the first half on a 7-0 run and took a 16-point lead into the break.

The Billikens exited the locker rooms with a reset demeanor and the offense firing on all cylinders as Kyla McMakin knocked down back-to-back three pointers while the defense put together key stops to reduce the deficit to 10 points. Buckets from Tierra Simon and Peyton Kennedy extended the Billikens run to 14-4 as they pulled within six points.

Kennedy furthered narrowed the Billikens' deficit to four points early in the fourth quarter, but the Rams found answers of their own to keep it out of reach. Just under the two-minute mark, SLU pulled within two points as Kennedy made a driving layup and drew the and-one, but the Billikens could not get over the hump, as the Rams leading scorer Dee Dee Davis iced the game from the charity stripe.

Kennedy (16), McMakin (13) and Brooklyn Gray (10) all reached double figures in the loss, ending the season with 26, 33 and 21 games in double figures, respectively. Kennedy also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while Kennedy Calhoun recorded four assists.

The Billikens end the season with a final record of 17-18 and an A-10 mark of 9-9.
