MADISON, Wis. – Saint Louis University women's basketball made program history here Monday night, as the Billikens defeated Wisconsin, 65-60, to advance to the Fab 4 for the first time ever.
The Billikens, who had never beaten Wisconsin before Monday night's game, reached 20 wins with the victory for the third time in school history.
The battle came down to the final seconds, as the Billikens found themselves trailing 60-59 with just under one-minute left to play.
Peyton Kennedy, who scored 15 points and grabbed seven boards against the Badgers, scored the Billikens go-ahead basket, giving them back the lead with 53 seconds left.
SLU led the home team for 36 minutes at the Kohl Center, as the Billikens held the Badgers to 28 percent shooting through the first two quarters and led by eight at the half. The Badgers clawed back in the ensuing 20 minutes, hitting a three-pointer to start the third quarter.
Kyla McMakin, who led the team with 18 points in her 36th double-figure game of the season, scored to put the Billikens up by 10 points.
The fourth quarter saw the Badgers use a 6-0 run to take the eventual one-point lead on their home court, before Kennedy's hook shot gave SLU the lead.
Julia Martinez grabbed two late steals to help seal the game for the Billikens, taking away the Badgers final attempts for a last-second rally.
Kennedy Calhoun's six takeaways were all impactful as the junior matched her career-high and solidified her spot in third place for steals in a season with 84 this year – she also scored 10 points.
Tierra Simon led the team with eight rebounds, while adding seven points.
SLU advances to play Vermont as one of the WNIT's final four teams on Wednesday night in Burlington, Vt. Tip-off against the Catamounts is set for 5 p.m. (CST) and 6 p.m. local time.
