Billikens Knock Off No. 7 Indiana in Opener

Matthew Wrobel scored the game-winner in the first half

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis opened its season on a high note Friday night, defeating No. 7 Indiana 2-0 in the season opener at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

Matthew Wrobel scored the game-winner in the 16th minute, then the Billikens benefited from an Indiana own goal in the 60th minute. Jeremi Abonnel earned the shutout in goal for SLU and made several dazzling saves, including one on a second-half IU penalty kick.

The game was played in front of a near capacity crowd of 5,753. It was the Billikens' first win against Indiana since 2007 and ended a seven-game slide in matchups against the Hoosiers.

Wrobel opened the scoring with an unassisted goal, but not before great work down the left side by Luis Lara. He put a ball into the box, and after a failed clearance Wrobel put it home to the left side. It was Wrobel's 15th career tally.

After halftime, the Billikens were the beneficiary of an Indiana own goal. Seth Anderson sent the ball into the box on a free kick, and SLU's Joey Maher deflected it. It hit right off an Indiana players' foot and found the back of the net to make it a 2-0 game.

Abonnel preserved the shutout, the fifth of his career, with a pair of stunning saves in the final minutes. He stopped a PK, then moments later, tipped a strong IU free kick over the bar to keep the clean sheet intact.

The Billikens could have another shot at a top-10 win on Thursday when they travel to Dallas to take on No. 10 SMU. The Mustangs won their season opener last night against Air Force and play Oral Roberts on Sunday.
