ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis sophomore
Sierra Larson scored a goal and tied a school record with three assists as the Billikens won their first game of the year, 7-1 over the visiting Frostburg State Bobcats Sunday at the SLU Field Hockey Complex.
The Bills move to 1-5 with the win, while FSU dips to 3-3.
SLU's seven goals were the most they have scored in a match since a 7-0 win over Rhodes College in 2002.
Larson is the sixth Billiken to record three assists in a match and the first to do so since Brooke Weaver in 2011 vs. Missouri State.
It also marked the first win for the Billikens at the new SLU Field Hockey Complex on the SLU campus.
Larson started the scoring the sixth minute when she fired her own rebound past the Frostburg State keeper. That was the only scoring in the first half as the teams went into halftime with the Bills leading 1-0
The Billikens exploded for four goals in the second half.
Ignacia Manriquez scored her first collegiate goal early in the third quarter off an assist from Larson.
Josefina Perez scored on a penalty stroke, followed by an
Abby Vidas (Larson assist) goal to make it 4-0 SLU. The Bills scored on another penalty stroke, this time from
Olivia Smith, as the Bills led 5-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
Perez would tack on another goal, her team-leading seventh of the season, off an assist from
Julia Rooijakkers. After FSU got one back,
Brynn Newborn scored her first collegiate goal off Larson's third assist of the day for the final 7-1 margin.
The Billikens resume Atlantic 10 Conference play next week when they head to Philadelphia to take on the La Salle Explorers on Friday afternoon.
