Billikens Top Loyola Chicago for Key A-10 Win

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis scored twice in the first half and those goals stood for a 2-1 Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer victory over Loyola Chicago Saturday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

The Billikens, who are unbeaten in their last four, improve to 3-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the A-10. Loyola Chicago dips to 1-6-2 and 0-1-1 in the league.

The match was played before 3,611 fans on SLU's Homecoming & Family Weekend.

The Billikens struck first in the eighth minute when Matthew Wrobel put SLU on top 1-0 on a penalty kick. Nate Ward drew the foul in the box when he was taken down by the Loyola Chicago keeper. Wrobel stepped to the spot and buried it for his second goal of the season.

Luis Lara made it 2-0 with a goal in the 27th minute. Cole Dougherty started the scoring play after he intercepted a pass as the Ramblers were threatening. He sent a long ball to Lara, who settled it and passed to Nate Ward. Ward sent a centering pass to Lara who finished it for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Ramblers got a goal from jack McFeely with 16 seconds left in regulation, but SLU hung on for the win and three important points in the league standings.

Saint Louis owned a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks on the night.

The Billikens remain at Hermann Stadium for a critical non-conference matchup Tuesday (Oct. 1) against Charlotte. Game time is 7 p.m. The 49ers are ranked No. 9 this week and are expected to move up after a 4-1 victory last night against South Florida.
