SETTING THE SCENE

  • Saint Louis plays host to the La Salle Explorers on Wednesday night at Chaifetz Arena. Game time on FanDuel Sports Network and ESPN+ is scheduled for 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday's game begins a stretch where the Billikens will play three of their next four at Chaifetz Arena. After a road game Saturday at George Washington, SLU is home for two in a row next week against VCU (Jan. 28) and Dayton (Jan. 31).

FOLLOWING THE ACTION

  • Wednesday's game will be televised on FanDuel Sports Network and will also stream live on ESPN+. Tom Ackerman (play-by-play), Troy Robertson (analyst) and Tamar Sher (reporter) will call the action.
  • KMOX 1120 AM is the home for Billiken Basketball on the radio. Billiken Hall of Famers and longtime SLU men's basketball radio partners Bob Ramsey and Earl Austin Jr. will the call the action for all SLU games, both at home and on the road. Ramsey is in his 39th season calling SLU games, while Austin is in year No. 34. 

BILLIKEN NOTABLES

  • Saint Louis enters the week as one of four teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference with one loss.
  • SLU split its two games in Richmond last week, bouncing back after its Tuesday loss at VCU with a 63-59 win at Richmond on Saturday.
  • Robbie Avila led the Billikens in scoring (21 ppg) and rebounding (8.5 rpg) last week. He shot 61.1 percent (11-18) from the field and 81.8 percent (18-22) from the line in the two games. 
  • Avila is the Billikens' leading scorer at 18.3 ppg. He has scored in double figures in all 15 appearances. His 4.3 assists and 1.9 3-pointers made per game lead all centers in NCAA Division I.
  • Gibson Jimerson, who scored 28 points against St. Bonaventure in the Bills' last game at Chaifetz Arena, scores 17.8 ppg and is second in the A-10 in 3-pointers made per game (3.22).
  • Isaiah Swope averages 17.7 points and 5.0 assists. He is one of six players in NCAA Division I averaging those numbers.
  • With the scoring trio of Avila, Jimerson and Swope, the Billikens are the only program in the country with three players averaging 17.7 ppg or more.
  • Kalu Anya leads the A-10 in rebounds per game (9.4).
  • Saint Louis leads the A-10 in FG% (.481), eFG% (.568) and 3s made per game (9.7). 
  • The Billikens are 9-1 at Chaifetz Arena this season.
  • Head coach Josh Schertz is in his first season at SLU. His .781 winning percentage ranks No. 7 among active coaches across all three NCAA divisions.

ABOUT THE EXPLORERS

  • The La Salle University Explorers (Philadelphia) travel to St. Louis with a 10-8 overall record and a 2-3 record in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
  • La Salle had its two-game winning streak snapped at UMass on Sunday, falling 82-60 to the Minutemen. The Explorers had won consecutive games against St. Bonaventure and Davidson. 
  • The Explorers are led by Corey McKeithan's 15.9 ppg. He also dishes out a team-high 54 assists and has knocked down a team-best 44 3-pointers.
  • Daeshon Shepherd averages 11.7 points and 4.2 rebounds for the Explorers.
  • Deuce Jones is an early candidate for A-10 Rookie of the Year. He has already been named A-10 Rookie of the Week four times this year, including the last two weeks. The freshman is averaging 11.8 ppg in conference play, including 17.7 ppg over his last three outings.
  • Demetrius Lilley is La Salle's top rebounder, pulling down 7.1 boards a contest.
  • Jahlil White leads the Explorers in blocked shots (13) and steals (29), and is second in rebounding (5.8).
  • The Explorers rank in the upper third of the conference in all rebounding categories, including offensive rebounds per game (third, 12.50), rebounds per game (fourth, 38.9) and rebound margin (fifth, +2.7).
  • La Salle is third in the A-10 in fastbreak points, averaging 13.0 per game.
  • Head coach Fran Dunphy is in his third season at La Salle and his 33rd year as a collegiate head coach, with all of his stops coming in Philadelphia (Penn, Temple, La Salle). He has won more than 600 games in his illustrious coaching career.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Saint Louis leads the all-time series against the Explorers 24-10.
  • Last season, the Billikens defeated the Explorers 102-84 in Philly. It was the most points scored by a Billiken team in an A-10 game, and was one shy of the all-time conference single-game scoring record for SLU of 103 vs. Wichita State on Feb. 18, 1956.
  • Saint Louis has won six straight overall in the series and nine in a row in games played at Chaifetz Arena. La Salle's last win in St. Louis came on Feb. 9, 2011.
  • The series dates back to the 1950s. SLU has a 18-7 record against the Explorers in A-10 regular-season games.
