Billikens Rally to Top Fordham, Grab First Place in A-10

ST. LOUIS – No. 20 Saint Louis scored three unanswered goals after falling behind 2-0 Saturday night to post a 3-2 victory over Fordham in Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer action at Hermann Stadium.

The Billikens improve to 8-2-4 overall and 5-0-1 in the A-10. They are in first place in the league with two league games remaining. Fordham falls to 7-3-3 and 4-1-2 in the league.

The Rams went ahead 2-0 in the first 20 minutes. The Bills got one goal back right before halftime, then scored twice in the second half to complete the thrilling come-from-behind victory.

The start time was pushed back nearly two hours after a day of persistent rain and storms in the St. Louis area, but Fordham didn't take long to crack the scoreboard. Ede Gramberg scored in the second minute off a centering pass from Daniel Lang to put the Rams on top early.

Fordham's Emile Kisse made it 2-0 Rams in the 19th minute, heading home a pass from Daniel D'Ippolito into the upper netting.

The Billikens got one back before halftime when Jackson Delkus scored. The ball was sent into the box, and Delkus pounced on the loose ball and fired past the Fordham keeper to make it a 2-1 game. It was Delkus' first goal of the season.

Fordham was awarded a penalty kick near the top of the second half, but Jeremi Abonnel was up to the task, saving D'Ippolito's chance to keep the Billikens within striking distance at 2-1.

In the 62nd minute, it was the Billikens' turn for a PK. Andrew Heckenlaible won the PK after being fouled in the box, and Quinten Blair buried the equalizer to even the match at 2-2. It was Blair's first goal of the season.

The Billikens' game-winner came in the 69th minute. Off a SLU corner kick, a Fordham defender deflected the ball out. But Heckenlaible was stationed in the box and volleyed it into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

Saint Louis plays its final regular-season road game on Saturday, Oct. 25, against Loyola Chicago. The A-10 tilt begins at 3 p.m.
