WHAT'S ON TAP?

  • Saint Louis welcomes fellow Jesuit institution San Francisco to Chaifetz Arena on Saturday night. Game time against the Dons is scheduled for 7 p.m.
  • It is the second game of a six-game homestand to close out the month of December. Also coming to Chaifetz Arena this month are Bethune-Cookman (Dec. 17), New Hampshire (Dec. 21), Principia (Dec. 28) and Saint Joseph's (Dec. 31).

FOLLOWING THE ACTION

  • Saturday's game will be televised on FanDuel Sports Network and streamed on ESPN+. Tom Ackerman, Troy Robertson and Tamar Sher are on the call.
  • 104.1 FM / 1120 AM KMOX is the home for Billiken Basketball on the radio. Billiken Hall of Famers and longtime SLU men's basketball radio partners Bob Ramsey and Earl Austin Jr. will the call the action for all SLU games, both at home and on the road. Billiken Basketball sends a special salute to Rammer, who is in his 40th season as the radio voice of SLU hoops, and Austin who is in year No. 35. The duo was recently honored with the Burnes-Broeg at the Missouri Athletic Club's Jack Buck Awards.

NEWS & NOTES

  • Saint Louis is 6-0 at Chaifetz Arena this season and has won nine straight on its home floor dating back to last year.
  • The Bills rank 11th in the NCAA in scoring margin (+22.0). SLU has won six games by 20 or more points, and has three victories of 30 or more.
  • Through games of Dec. 11, the Billikens lead the country in team free-throw percentage (.813, 165-203).  
  • The Billikens lead the Atlantic 10 and are 13th nationally in scoring offense, averaging 91.6 ppg. SLU is eighth in the country in fast-break points per game (20.6).
  • The Bills are equally efficient on the defensive end. Opponents shoot just 37.2 percent against them, 14th in the NCAA. 
  • Saint Louis is fifth in the country in rebounding margin (+12.9) and fourth in the NCAA in defensive rpg (31.22).
  • Robbie Avila and Dion Brown lead a balanced scoring effort with 12.4 ppg apiece. Avila leads SLU in assists (3.4 per game), while Brown is the Bills' top rebounder at 6.7 rpg.
  • Also scoring in double figures are Trey Green (12.3), Amari McCottry (11.6) and Quentin Jones (10.8 ppg). Jones was named A-10 Player of the Week this week after leading the Bills with 17.5 ppg in two wins last week.
  • Seven Billikens average at least 8.4 ppg. SLU has had six different players lead the team in scoring in a game this season.
  • Robbie Avila has been named to preseason Watch Lists for the Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy, Wooden Award and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award. Last season he averaged 17.3 points and 6.9 rebounds. He led all centers in Division I in 3s made per game and assists per game. 
  • Billiken head coach Josh Schertz is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach. His .775 winning percentage ranks No. 8 among active coaches in the NCAA.

ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO

  • The Dons enter Saturday's game with a 6-4 record. They are coming off a 65-62 win against Mississippi State last Sunday.
  • Four Dons score in double figures, led by Ryan Beasley's 13.0 ppg. Mookie Cook averages 11.7 ppg, with Tyrone Riley IV and David Fuchs following with 10.8 ppg and 10.4 ppg, respectively. 
  • Cook, a transfer from Oregon, leads USF with 14 blocked shots and is tied for the team lead with 16 3-pointers. He also hauls in 6.0 rpg. Fuchs, who played two seasons at Rhode Island, leads San Francisco with 6.6 rpg, though he has missed the last two games due to an injury.
  • San Francisco leads the WCC with 9.6 3-pointers made per game.
  • Head coach Chris Gerlufsen is in his fourth year at USF with a 74-39 record. He is 82-44 in five years overall.

SERIES HISTORY

  • The Bills and Dons are meeting for a seventh time. The series is tied 3-3, with the home team winning every matchup.
  • This is the second game of a home-and-home series between the squads. Last year, San Francisco defeated the Bills 78-61 at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco. The Billikens trailed by as many as 13 in the opening half before going on a 9-0 run, making seven of its last nine shots to close the half to pull within four of the lead at the break. But USF gained control in the second half to post the win. Gibson Jimerson broke Anthony Bonner's career scoring record in a second-half drive to the bucket that was ruled a goal-tend. Robbie Avila finished with a game-high 13 points and dished out five assists. Amari McCottry scored a then-career-best nine points.
