WHAT'S ON TAP?

  • Saint Louis opens Atlantic 10 Conference play on Wednesday when it takes on the Saint Joseph's Hawks on New Year's Eve. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Chaifetz Arena.
  • It is the final game of a six-game homestand for the Bills. SLU has an early bye in A-10 play and is off for a week following the SJU game. The Billikens are next in action Wednesday, Jan. 7, in a showdown against A-10 preseason-favorite VCU in Richmond. That game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.

FOLLOWING THE ACTION

  • Wednesday's game will be televised on FanDuel Sports Network and streamed on ESPN+. Tom Ackerman, Troy Robertson and Tamar Sher are on the call.
  • 104.1 FM / 1120 AM KMOX is the home for Billiken Basketball on the radio. Billiken Hall of Famers and longtime SLU men's basketball radio partners Bob Ramsey and Earl Austin Jr. will the call the action for all SLU games, both at home and on the road. Billiken Basketball sends a special salute to Rammer, who is in his 40th season as the radio voice of SLU hoops, and Austin who is in year No. 35. The duo were recently honored with the Burnes-Broeg at the Missouri Athletic Club's Jack Buck Awards.

NEWS & NOTES

  • The Billikens are 12-1 for the first time since 2011-12. A win Wednesday would give SLU its best start since 1993-94, when the Bills began the year 14-0 and were 19-1 through 20 games.
  • Saint Louis is looking to extend the longest winning streak in Chaifetz Arena history, which currently sits at 13 games dating back to last season. SLU is 10-0 on its home floor this season.
  • SLU has scored 85 or more points in six straight games for the first time ever. Also, the five 100+ point games is a school record.
  • The Billikens lead the A-10 in the following offensive categories (NCAA rank): Scoring margin (2nd), fastbreak points per game (4th), scoring offense (9th), effective FG% (12th), free-throw percentage (13th), FG% (16th), assists per game (18th) and assist/turnover ratio (75th).
  • SLU is one of the top rebounding teams in the NCAA, ranking third in the nation in rebounds per game (45.6) and 2nd in rebound margin (+15.7).
  • Defensively, opponents shoot just 35.8 percent against them, third in the NCAA. The Bills also lead the league and are ninth nationally in 3FG% defense (.272).
  • Dion Brown leads the Billikens in scoring (13.2 ppg) and rebounding (6.9 rpg). He is seventh in the NCAA and tied for first among guards (min. five makes/game) in FG% (.664).
  • Robbie Avila leads all centers in NCAA Division I with 3.6 assists/game. He is the only active player in NCAA Division I with at least 1,500 career points, 600 career rebounds and 350 career assists.
  • Trey Green (11.6 ppg) is second in the A-10 with 2.77 3-pointers per game.
  • Jax Kerr is the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week. Amari McCottry and Quentin Jones have each earned A-10 Player of the Week honors this year.
  • Robbie Avila has been named to preseason Watch Lists for the Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy, Wooden Award and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award. Last season he averaged 17.3 points and 6.9 rebounds. He led all centers in Division I in 3s made per game and assists per game. 
  • Billiken head coach Josh Schertz is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach. His .776 winning percentage ranks No. 8 among active coaches in the NCAA.

ABOUT SAINT JOSEPH'S

  • The Saint Joseph's Hawks enter Wednesday's game 8-5 overall. SJU is coming off a 87-65 win over Arcadia (NCAA Division III) on Sunday.
  • The Hawks are under the direction of Steve Donahue, who took over as head coach when Billy Lange departed the program in September.
  • Jaiden Glover-Toscano is the Hawks' active leading scorer with 15.0 ppg. He is coming off a career-high 29 point effort against Arcadia after missing the previous two games win an injury. Glover-Toscano has drilled a team-high 2.7 treys per game.  
  • Khaffiq Myers is averaging 12.3 points and 2.7 assists over the Hawks' last three games.
  • St. Joe's is a tall team with three players 6-10 or taller. The Hawks lead the league and are 25th in the NCAA with 5.2 blocks per game. They are the A-10 leader as well in offensive rebounds per game (13.8).

  • Saint Louis leads the all-time series 18-6.
  • The teams split a home-and-home series last year with each team winning on its home court.
  • Saint Joseph's has never won at Chaifetz Arena. The Hawks have only one win in St. Louis, the first game they played here in 2006 at Enterprise Center. SLU owns a 10-0 record against the Hawks at Chaifetz Arena.
