WHAT'S ON TAP?

  • Saint Louis returns to Chaifetz Arena to host Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon. Game time is 2 p.m.
  • It's the start of a season-long six-game homestand for the Billikens to round out December.

Billiken Basketball sends a special salute to Rammer, who is in his 40th season as the radio voice of SLU hoops, and Austin who is in year No. 35.

NEWS & NOTES

  • The Billikens recently wrapped up a three-game California swing. SLU went 2-1 on the 10-day trip to Palm Springs and Los Angeles with wins against Santa Clara and LMU. The Bills fell on a last-second shot to Stanford in the Acrisure Invitational title game.
  • Saint Louis is 5-0 at Chaifetz Arena this season and has won eight straight on its home floor dating back to last year.
  • Saint Louis enters the weekend as the top free-throw shooting team in the NCAA. The Bills are hitting 82.3 percent (149-181) from the charity stripe.
  • The Billikens are second in the Atlantic 10 and 29th nationally in scoring offense, pumping in 89.6 ppg. SLU's scoring margin (+19.2) leads the A-10 and is 22nd nationally.
  • The Bills are equally efficient on the defensive end. Opponents shoot just 36.9 percent against them, 10th in the NCAA. 
  • Saint Louis is eighth in the country in rebounding margin (+12.8).
  • Robbie Avila and Trey Green lead four Billikens in double-figures with 13.3 ppg. Green led SLU in all three games in California and leads the A-10 and is 35th nationally with 3.25 3-pointers per game. Avila leads the Billikens in assists with 3.25 per game.
  • Dion Brown and Amari McCottry average 12.4 ppg and 11.4 ppg, respectively. Brown is the Billikens' top rebounder at 7.0 rpg.
  • Robbie Avila has been named to preseason Watch Lists for the Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy, Wooden Award and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award. Last season he averaged 17.3 points and 6.9 rebounds. He led all centers in Division I in 3s made per game and assists per game. 
  • Billiken head coach Josh Schertz is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach. His .774 winning percentage ranks No. 8 among active coaches in the NCAA.

ABOUT CENTRAL MICHIGAN

  • The Chippewas enter Sunday's game with a 3-5 record. They are coming off an 83-72 loss at Loyola Chicago.
  • Central Michigan has no returning players from last year. The brand-new 15-player roster consists of 12 transfers and three freshman.
  • CMU is led by first-year head coach Andy Bronkema, who spent the previous 12 seasons as head coach at NCAA Division II Ferris State. He led the Bulldogs to the 2017-18 NCAA Division II National Championship.
  • Ferris State transfer Nathan Claerbaut leads the Chippewas in scoring (11.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg). The 7-foot center also contributes 1.6 blocks per game.
  • Next on the scoring list are four more transfers all averaging better than 9.0 points per game – Logan McIntire (Kentucky Wesleyan), Tamario Adley (Wayne State), Rodney Johnson Jr. (Tennessee Tech) and Phat Phat Brooks (Michigan).
  • The Chippewas are at or near the top of their league in blocks per game (1st, 4.4) and offensive rebounds per game (2nd, 12.4). Central Michigan is fourth in the MAC in 3-point percentage defense (.321).

  • This is the Billikens' first meeting against Central Michigan on the hardwood.
