Billikens Cruise Past Purple Aces for 72-55 Win

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis women's basketball earned back-to-back wins, taking down Evansville 72-55 on Sunday evening at Chaifetz Arena. 

The game started with a strong push from Saint Louis, as the Billikens quickly went on a 7-0 run. Led by Zhykera Brown, SLU found early success on offense to open the game, ending the quarter by making seven of 14 shots. Brown played significant minutes in the first quarter, scoring eight points in the first ten minutes. Saint Louis held a five-point lead at the end of the quarter, with a score of 20-15.

The Billikens scored the first basket of the second quarter before the Purple Aces went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 22. After Evansville's offensive surge, Saint Louis responded with an 11-0 run and led the rest of the game. The Billikens defense held strong, limiting the Purple Aces to a scoreless six and a half minutes in the second quarter. The Billikens led throughout the entire first half and went into the break with a 34-25 lead.  

Defense continued to lead the way for the Billikens in the second half. SLU kept forcing tough shots on the Purple Aces and even held them scoreless for a combined four minutes in the third quarter. Efficiency was key for Saint Louis as they shot 64.3% from the field in the third quarter, scoring 21 points, the most they scored in a quarter against Evansville.

SLU kept its firm control over Evansville, extending its lead to a game-high 21 points midway through the fourth quarter. The Billikens finished the second half shooting 61.5% from the field in their 17-point win.

  • Four different players scored in double figures for the third time this season (Zhykera Brown, Jahda Denis, Koerkenmeier and Alexia Nelson)
  • Koerkenmeier had a perfect night from the field, 6-6, and a new career high with four assists
  • 49.2% from the field is the best shooting percentage this season for the Billikens
