Billikens Battle in 4-2 NCAA Regional Loss to Indiana

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.Abby Mallo broke one Atlantic 10 Conference record and tied another, and Isabel Royle held the nation's batting average leader to six hits, but Indiana held off Saint Louis 4-2 in a Fayetteville Regional elimination game Saturday afternoon at Bogle Park.

The Billikens, making their first NCAA Tournament appearance, finished the season with a 34-24 record. SLU captured its first A-10 Championship title and posted the second-highest win total in program history. The 34 victories included school records of 15 consecutive wins overall, 16 straight conference wins and 12 consecutive home wins.

Mallo collected two RBIs to lift her total to 82, surpassing the previous A-10 mark of 80. One of the two RBIs came on her 20th home run of the season, matching the conference record.

Indiana (34-19) struck first, scoring twice in the opening frame on three hits. The Hoosiers managed just three hits the rest of the way.

Saint Louis cut the margin in half in the third. With one out, Karsen Jany singled, Natalie Sullivan bunted for a hit and Abby Ulsas singled to load the bases for Mallo, who drew a walk to score Jany.

After Indiana expanded its lead to 4-1 with a two-run fifth, Mallo led off the Billiken sixth with a solo shot that just sneaked over the wall in right-center. Kendall Johnson and Chloe Rhine followed with a single and double, respectively, but SLU was unable to push across any more runs.

Royle registered her second 1-2-3 inning in the Indiana sixth. In the Saint Louis seventh, Sullivan drew a one-out walk but was stranded at first.

The Billikens outhit the Hoosiers, who entered the game with an NCAA-leading .366 batting average, 7-6. Rhine was 2-for-2.
