SLU Stays Perfect at Home With Five-Set Win Over Bears

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University volleyball defeated Missouri State in a five-set thriller Thursday night at Chaifetz Pavilion to open the Missouri Challenge. The Billikens remain undefeated at home.
 
Set 1: MSU 25, SLU 21
SLU jumped out to a 5-1 lead before the Bears tied it at 8 and eventually went ahead 11-8. The Billikens evened the score at 12, but Missouri State pulled away late to take the set.
 
Set 2: SLU 25, MSU 13
The Billikens opened on an 8-1 run and cruised to a dominant win. Chloe Maughan tallied 10 digs in the set.
 
Set 3: SLU 25, MSU 11
SLU controlled the set from the start with an 11-1 lead. The Billikens hit .500 as a team with only one attack error while holding Missouri State to -.069.
 
Set 4: MSU 25, SLU 23
The Bears led 8-4 early before SLU rallied to tie it at 15 and then take a brief lead. Missouri State answered late to force a decisive fifth set.
 
Set 5: SLU 15, MSU 13
The Billikens took a 6-1 lead, but the Bears battled back to 8-6. SLU led 14-11 and secured the match on its third match point.
 
NOTABLES
  • Freshman Ellie Rink posted 29 kills, 11 digs, two block assists and an ace. Her 29 kills are the most by a freshman in the A-10 this season and tied for the second most in the country. It also marked her third career double-double.
  • Tamia Maddox recorded her first career double-double with 14 kills and a career-high 11 digs.
  • Maughan set a career high with 24 kills.
  • Lucy Rankin added four service aces.
  • SLU improved to 2-0 under head coach Andrea Beaty-Cain against her alma mater.
