PHILADELPHIA – Saint Louis hung with the 15th-ranked Saint Joseph's on Friday before falling 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference field hockey opener for both squads.
SLU falls to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in A-10 with the loss. The Hawks improve to 4-2 and 1-0 in league play.
SLU goalkeeper Abby Schalow kept the Billikens in the game as she made a career-high 18 saves. The 18 stops were tied for the fourth-most in NCAA Division I this season.
It was a 2-0 game heading into the fourth quarter, and the Bills were inches away from cutting it to 2-1 after a chance on a penalty corner. SLU's deflected shot sailed just over the crossbar, however, and Saint Joseph's scored later in the quarter to put the game away.
The Billikens are back in action on Sunday at 10 a.m. (CT) when they head to Loretto, Pa., to take on Saint Francis. The Red Flash are 4-3 on the season following their 6-2 win Friday against LIU.
