WHAT'S ON TAP?

  • Saint Louis heads to Richmond, Va., to face VCU Wednesday in a showdown of the Atlantic 10's top two teams. Game time on CBS Sports Network is slated for 6 p.m. (CT).
  • The Rams and Billikens were first and second, respectively, in the league's preseason coaches poll and were separated by just one point. Each team had the same number of first-place votes. Additionally, SLU and VCU are the top two teams in the majority of in-season metrics entering this week, including KenPom (41 and 42) and the NCAA NET Ranking (29 and 52).

FOLLOWING THE ACTION

  • Wednesday's game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network. Chris Lewis, Steve Lappas and Jaclyn DeAugustino are on the call.
  • 104.1 FM / 1120 AM KMOX is the home for Billiken Basketball on the radio. Billiken Hall of Famers and longtime SLU men's basketball radio partners Bob Ramsey and Earl Austin Jr. will the call the action for all SLU games, both at home and on the road. Billiken Basketball sends a special salute to Rammer, who is in his 40th season as the radio voice of SLU hoops, and Austin who is in year No. 35. The duo were recently honored with the Burnes-Broeg at the Missouri Athletic Club's Jack Buck Awards.

NEWS & NOTES

  • The Billikens are off to their best start since 1993-94. That team began the year 14-0 and were 19-1 through 20 games.
  • SLU is coming off a win against Saint Joseph's where it set a school record by making 19 3-pointers.
  • This is the first time in school history the Bills have scored 85 or more points in seven straight games and 90 or more points in three straight. Also, the six 100+ point games this season is a school record.
  • The Billikens are fourth in the nation in scoring offense with 95.0 ppg. Their +27.5 scoring margin is second nationally. SLU is eighth nationally in team FG% (.525).
  • SLU leads the Atlantic 10 in assists per game (12th nationally) and assist-to-turnover ratio (53rd nationally).
  • Defensively, opponents shoot just 36.2 percent against them, second in the NCAA. The Bills also lead the league and are 10th nationally in 3FG% defense (.278). 
  • SLU is one of the top rebounding teams in the NCAA, ranking third in the nation in rebounds per game (44.6) and rebound margin (+14.6).
  • Robbie Avila is SLU's leading scorer at 12.9 ppg. He leads all centers in NCAA Division I with 3.9 assists/game. He is the only active player in NCAA Division I with at least 1,500 career points, 600 career rebounds and 350 career assists.
  • Dion Brown scores 12.8 ppg and leads the team with 6.5 rpg. He is seventh in the NCAA and first among guards in the country (min. 5 FGs/game) in FG% (.673).
  • Trey Green (11.6 ppg) is second in the A-10 with 2.86 3-pointers per game. He leads the league in 3FG% (min. 2.5 3FGs/game), knocking down 45.5 percent from distance.
  • Robbie Avila has been named to preseason Watch Lists for the Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy, Wooden Award and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award. Last season he averaged 17.3 points and 6.9 rebounds. He led all centers in Division I in 3s made per game and assists per game. 
  • Billiken head coach Josh Schertz is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach. His .777 winning percentage ranks No. 7 among active coaches in the NCAA.

ABOUT VCU

  • The VCU Rams enter Wednesday's matchup 11-4 overall and 2-0 in A-10 play. The Rams defeated St. Bonaventure at Siegel Center in the A-10 opener New Year's Eve, and are coming off a win at Duquesne.
  • Head coach Phil Martelli Jr. is in his first year with the Rams. He came to VCU after three seasons at Bryant University in Rhode Island.
  • Like SLU, VCU also has a balanced scoring output as eight players average 6.1 points or more. Terrence Hill Jr. leads the way with 14.0 ppg, all off the bench. He is a 44 percent shooter (37-84) from 3-point range, the second-best mark in the A-10 trailing only SLU's Trey Green.
  • Lazar Djokovic averages 13.3 ppg and has a team-high 17 blocked shots. He also tied for team-high honors with 5.2 rpg.
  • Jadrian Tracey and Nyk Lewis also score in double figures with 10.5 ppg and 10.2 ppg, respectively. Lewis has be named A-10 Freshman of the Week on three occasions this year.
  • The Rams put up a lot of 3s, ranking second in the A-10 only to Saint Louis in 3-point attempts per game (27.4) and 3-pointers per game (10.1).
  • The Billikens and Rams will meet later in the year on Friday, Feb. 20, at Chaifetz Arena.

SERIES HISTORY

  • VCU owns a 17-6 lead in the series, which includes a 10-0 record in favor of the Rams at the Siegel Center.
  • Last year's series was split 1-1, with both teams winning on its home court. The SLU win on Jan. 28 at Chaifetz Arena snapped a six-game series winning streak for VCU.
  • The teams first met in the 2010 CBI championship round, a best-of-three series. VCU, led then by Shaka Smart, defeated Rick Majerus' Billikens in the first two games to win the CBI title..
