ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis field hockey earned a 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference field hockey victory over Davidson on Sunday afternoon at the SLU Field Hockey Complex.
The Billikens (6-9, 2-4 A10) recorded their second conference win of the season and kept their hopes alive for a berth in the four-team A-10 Championship field.
The victory gives Saint Louis six wins this season, its highest total since 2006, when the Billikens finished 7-9. It also marks the program's first season with multiple conference victories since 2007.
The Billiken defense, anchored by Ella Etherington and goalkeeper Abby Schalow, held the Wildcats scoreless despite facing 17 shots and 16 penalty corners.
Saint Louis broke through in the second quarter when Ella Kappesser scored the game's only goal at the 25:59 mark. Kappesser finished a feed from Penny Dirou to give the Billikens a 1-0 lead.
Davidson continued to apply pressure throughout the second half, but the Billikens stood firm defensively.Â
Etherington recorded a defensive save in the third quarter, while Schalow turned aside three shots to preserve the shutout. Saint Louis also blocked several Davidson attempts as the Wildcats looked for an equalizer late in the contest.
The Billikens conclude the regular season with a pair of games in Louisville, Ky., next weekend. They face Ball State on Friday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. CT, and Bellarmine on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
