Former Billiken Women’s Basketball Head Coach John O’Brien Passes Away

ST. LOUIS - John O'Brien, who coached the Saint Louis University women's basketball team for 13 seasons from 1976 to 1989, passed away Sept. 18, 2026, surrounded by his family.

O'Brien remains the winningest coach in Saint Louis women's basketball history, holding program records for career victories (176) and career winning percentage (.545).

During his tenure on the Billiken bench, O'Brien guided Saint Louis to nine consecutive seasons of .500 or better basketball from 1977 through 1986.

O'Brien was inducted into the Billiken Hall of Fame in 2001 as a recipient of the Bauman Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding character and sportsmanship and made significant contributions to Saint Louis University athletics.

The Saint Louis University Department of Athletics extends its deepest condolences to the O'Brien family and all those who knew and loved John. He will be honored before tonight's women's basketball home opener against Milwaukee.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or a charity of choice.
