BASE Preview: Billikens Open Season Against Ohio State

Saint Louis opens the 2026 season with a trip to Pensacola, Florida for a three-game series against Ohio State.
 
QUICK HITTERS
  • Riley Iffrig returns at first base, he was a second team all-conference selection last season. He was the lone A-10 first basemen to be named in the Top 50 by D1 Baseball.
  • Iffrig posted a .341 overall batting average with eight homeruns and a team-high 65 RBI.
  • Hank Gomric, an all-rookie selection, also returns for the Billikens. Last season, he batted .304 and stole 11 bases.
  • Josh Cunningham is back on the mound after being name to the Atlantic 10 all-tournament team. He was named a Top 200 starting pitcher by D1 Baseball.
  • Cunningham ended the conference season with a 4.0 ERA, holding opponents to a .258 average.
  • Four-year starter Austin Neuweg will help lead the infield for Saint Louis. He was second on the team with 121 assists last season, helping turn 18 double plays
  • Saint Louis had the best fielding percentage in A-10 play last season at .980.
  • The Billiken pitching staff has a combined ERA of 4.52, good for second in the A-10.
  • SLU added 20 new players to this seasons roster.
  • Interim head coach Miles Miller enters to third season with the Billikens, but first at the helm. He was the pitching coach/ recruiting coordinator for the last two seasons.

SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES
  • Return 15 players from 2025 and add 22 newcomers.
  • Henry Kaczmar returns to Columbus after one season at South Carolina — 2024 All-Big Ten Second Team selection who hit .310 with 14 HR and 91 RBIs in two seasons at Ohio State.
  • Lee Ellis led returning hitters in 2025, batting .296 with seven HR and 34 RBIs — 7-for-8 in stolen bases.
  • Mason Eckelman hit .281 with five HR and 29 RBIs — named a Big Ten Player to Watch and a Perfect Game Preseason All-Big Ten selection.
  • Gavin Kuzniewski struck out 43 in 56 innings in 2025 — named a Big Ten Player to Watch.
  • Douglas Bauer made a team-high 21 appearances last season, going 3-1 with 30 strikeouts in 35 innings.
  • Two-way transfer Miles Vandenheuvel hit .297 with 89 hits at Eastern Arizona and adds depth on the mound.
