PITTSBURGH – Saint Louis senior center Robbie Avila has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year, the league announced Wednesday ahead of the A-10 Men's Basketball Championship in Pittsburgh.
Avila, who also earned first-team All-Conference honors, was one of a league-high six Billikens recognized with All-Conference accolades. Trey Green, Amari McCottry and Kellen Thames were named to the third team, while Dion Brown earned a spot on the A-10 All-Defensive Team. Those honors were voted on by the league's head coaches.
Ishan Sharma was named to the five-man A-10 All-Academic Team in voting conducted by the league's media relations directors.
Avila becomes the third conference Player of the Year in program history. David Burns was the Metro Conference Player of the Year in 1980-81, while Jordair Jett earned A-10 Player of the Year honors in 2013-14.
The four Billikens on the primary All-Conference teams are tied for the most in program history. The last time Saint Louis had four players named to the primary All-Conference teams was during the 1951-52 season in the Missouri Valley Conference – Ray Steiner (first team), Fred Kovar (second team), Bob Koch (second team) and Lou McKenna (second team).
One of the top playmaking big men in the country, Avila leads the Billikens in scoring (12.6 ppg) and assists (4.1 apg). He also leads all NCAA centers with 1.9 3-pointers made per game. Avila, who earned second-team All-Conference honors last season, is one of just three centers in NCAA history with 200 or more career 3-pointers.
Green is among the nation's top 3-point shooters. He leads the A-10 and ranks fifth nationally in 3-point field-goal percentage (.455) and also leads the league with 2.83 3-pointers made per game. It marks the second conference honor of his career after earning Big East All-Freshman Team recognition at Xavier in 2024.
McCottry has taken a major step forward in his second season with the Billikens. He ranks fourth on the team in scoring (10.3 ppg) and second in rebounding (5.3 rpg), while his 36 steals are second on the squad.
Thames earns All-Conference honors for the first time following an electrifying redshirt junior season. He averages 9.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game and leads the team with 40 steals despite averaging just 17.4 minutes. His .669 field-goal percentage currently ranks as the best single-season mark in school history.
Brown earned All-Defensive team honors thanks in part to his on-ball defense against some of the league's top point guards. He is second on the team in scoring (11.2 ppg) and leads the Billikens in rebounding at 5.5 per game.
Sharma, a sports business major, ranks second on the Billikens and fourth in the A-10 with 74 made 3-pointers. He also ranks second on the team and in the conference in 3-point percentage (.440).
The Billikens (27-4, 15-3 A-10) are the No. 1 seed in this week's A-10 Men's Basketball Championship after sharing the league regular-season title with VCU. It marks the third time Saint Louis has earned at least a share of the A-10 regular-season championship.
Saint Louis opens play in the A-10 Championship on Friday, March 13, facing either No. 8 Fordham or No. 9 George Washington in the quarterfinals. Friday's tipoff on USA Network is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. CT / 11:30 a.m. ET.
