ST. LOUIS – No. 15 SMU scored four times in the second half to post a 4-0 victory over the fourth-ranked Billikens Monday at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
The Billikens (1-1-0) and Mustangs (2-0-0) played to a scoreless halftime tie before SMU erupted for four goals in a span of 20 minutes in the second half. A crowd of 1,233 attended the match.
SMU broke through in the 51st minute when Mukisa Emmanuel converted a pass from Landon Hickam to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. Emmanuel struck again less than four minutes later, converting a penalty kick in the 54th minute to double the advantage.
Milton Lopez added two more goals for SMU. He scored in the 66th minute off an assist from Jaylinn Mitchell before finding the net again in the 69th minute, with Mitchell again providing the assist.
The Mustangs controlled play throughout the match, holding a 19-5 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. SMU also recorded five shots on goal compared to one for the Billikens.
Alander Soares registered the Billikens' only shot on target, forcing a save from SMU's Jonathan Evans in the 41st minute.Â
The Billikens were reduced to 10 men in the 62nd minute when Carlos Leatherman received a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.
Saint Louis returns to action on Friday when it plays its first road matchup of the year at Notre Dame. Game time against the Fighting Irish is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT).
