NORFOLK, Va. – Saint Louis University field hockey put together a valiant effort on the road against No. 20 Old Dominion Sunday afternoon, battling the nationally ranked Monarchs before falling 5-1 at ODU's L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
Old Dominion entered the contest ranked No. 20 in this week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll and improved to 7-2 on the season. The Billikens fall to 2-8.
Saint Louis wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Brynn Newborn put the Billikens ahead just 2:01 into the match, converting an early opportunity for her third goal of the season.
The Monarchs answered later in the first quarter when Serena Langendoen converted a penalty stroke, sending the teams into the second quarter tied 1-1.
Old Dominion took control in the second quarter, scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. Sofia Marciano scored at the 20:00 mark with an assist from Lotte Haagmans before Josie Painter added another goal at 24:43.
The Billikens continued to battle defensively in the third quarter, holding the Monarchs scoreless despite ODU earning four penalty corners. Abby Schalow kept Saint Louis within striking distance throughout the match, recording a season-high 11 saves.
Old Dominion added a pair of goals in the fourth quarter, including another penalty-stroke goal from Langendoen at 48:07. Avery Jackson capped the scoring at 57:30.
The Billikens return to action next Friday when they resume Atlantic 10 play at Lock Haven.
