EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE scored in the first half and held on for a 1-0 victory over the Saint Louis Billikens Sunday in the annual Bronze Boot match at Korte Stadium.
SLU falls to 2-2-1 overall with the loss, while SIUE improves to 1-3. The Cougars earned the Bronze Boot trophy with the victory.
Ryley Gibbs scored the game's lone goal in the 36th minute, finishing a pass from Daniel Murray to give SIUE the lead. The Cougars carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime and held off a late Billiken push to secure the victory.
Saint Louis created several opportunities throughout the match, putting five of its nine shots on goal, but the Billikens were unable to slip one past Cougars goalkeeper Ioannis Koupepides, who made five saves to preserve the shutout.
The Billikens return to action Saturday, Sept. 12, when they face nationally ranked Akron at Hermann Stadium in a 7 p.m. kickoff. The SLU women's team faces nationally ranked Kansas earlier that day at 3:30 p.m.
