Saint Louis University head volleyball coach Kent Miller announced the addition of Matt Sprague as assistant coach to the program in August of 2022.

The 2022 season was Sprague's first as an assistant coach with the Billikens.

Sprague, a former outside hitter and two-time team captain at Ball State, returns to the Billikens for a second stint after serving as SLU’s volunteer assistant coach in 2013.

The Billikens mark Sprague’s third stop as an assistant coach. He last spent the 2018 season helping Bradley to a 24-9 record, the second-best win improvement in the NCAA that year, and the first postseason appearance in Braves’ program history. A trio of Braves earned All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades, including the MVC Freshman of the Year.

Prior to Bradley, Sprague was an assistant coach at Northern Illinois for three seasons. In that span, the Huskies went 65-27 (.707) overall and recorded a 43-5 (.896) mark in Mid-American Conference action.

While at NIU, Sprague helped mentor an honorable mention All-American, a total of four AVCA All-Midwest Region honorees, a pair of MAC Player of the Year honorees and nine First-Team All-MAC selections.

Northern Illinois won three straight MAC Division titles in addition to the 2016 Mid-American Conference Tournament to culminate what was a 25-6 season with the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in five seasons.

Before serving as a volunteer assistant coach in 2013 with the Billikens, Sprague was head coach of the High Performance STL Volleyball Club’s Boys 15-2 team.  He led his squad to a national qualifier win in addition to assisting with the club’s Girls 18-1 squad as an assistant coach.

An outside hitter at Ball State, Sprague was a two-time team captain for the Cardinals and concluded his collegiate career with 454 kills and 339 digs. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 2010.
