Louisville - Tenth-ranked Saint Louis University scored three second-half goals to knock off Louisville 3-1 tonight in a Conference USA men's soccer match before 3,552 at Cardinal Field. Billiken sophomore midfielder Nick Walls scored a goal and assisted on another as Saint Louis extended its winning streak to five.
"It was a physical match as the eight cautions handed out would attest," Billikens head coach Bob Warming said. "Louisville had the best of it in the first half, but we regained our defensive intensity in the second half and were all over them."
The Cardinals dominated the first half by out-shooting the Billikens 8-to-2. UL jumped on top at 32:19 as seniors Shawn Faria and Stuart Langrish combined. Off Langrish's free kick, Faria out-leaped the Billiken defense and sent a 10-yard header past SLU keeper Paul Nagy. The Cards carried the lead to halftime.
The Billikens tied the match on a spectacular goal by freshman Brad Davis. On a counter attack, Walls sped down the left side and hit a ball to the near post. Davis slid in among Cards keeper Jeremy Morales and another UL defender. As all three were on the turf, the ball popped into the air and Davis volleyed it into the net.
Controversy set in next when Cards defender Adrian Cann was ejected at 63:44. When the Louisville bench argued vehemently that the wrong player was sent off, a Cardinal assistant coach also was ejected.
"Louisville seemed to have a good argument, and that situation changed the game significantly for them in the back," Warming said.
The Billikens took the lead less than two minutes later when junior midfielder David Beck netted his third goal of the season at 65:17. Off a Brian Hadican free kick, junior sweeper Marty Tappel sent a cross to the far post. Sophomore defender Jason Cole laid it back for Beck who drilled it from eight yards.
Saint Louis took advantage of another free kick, and Walls put the game away at 72:39. Hadican served a ball that Walls headed in from 10 yards.
"Our younger guys, who hadn't played a C-USA road game yet, learned a valuable lesson tonight without having to lose the match to do it," Warming said. "They found out how tough they need to play in a hostile environment on the road in this league to be able to win."
Nagy made five saves to pick up the victory for Saint Louis, while UL's Morales made three stops. The Cards out-shot the Billikens 12-to-10 for the match.
The Billikens are 8-2-1 overall and sit atop C-USA with a 3-0-0 mark as the only unbeaten team in league play, while Louisville is 9-6-0 and 2-2-0. The Billikens return home to entertain Cincinnati on Wed., Oct. 18.
