St. Louis - Eleventh-ranked Saint Louis University couldn't find the back of the net tonight and played to a scoreless overtime tie with Cincinnati in a Conference USA men's soccer match before 1,582 at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. The Billikens out-shot the Bearcats 14-to-5 and had an 8-to-4 advantage in corner kicks, but never could get one past Bearcats keeper Sacha Nathu.
"They are just hard to get through, plain and simple," Billikens head coach Bob Warming said. "There never was any real flow or rhythm to the match. Yet we created far more scoring opportunities and had nearly three times as many shots."
Cincinnati played cautiously throughout the match and never seriously tested Billiken keeper John Politis, who made one save while posting his fifth shutout of the season. The 'Cats' most dangerous chance came in the second half but it didn't even result in a shot. When UC leading scorer Myron Vaughn found himself set to break in all alone from 18 yards, he chose to pass and the ball went over the endline.
Billiken freshman Brad Davis was on the attack throughout the match and had a game-high four shots. UC's Nathu twice made solid saves off Davis free kicks that were ticketed as the winner. Nathu also survived a scramble in his own goal box that resulted in a save off the foot of Billiken defensive midfielder Joe Hammes.
Saint Louis leading scorer Jack Jewsbury and senior forward Vedad Alagic each pumped three shots toward the UC goal. Nathu stopped Jewsbury from the top of the penalty area in the 68th minute. Meanwhile, Alagic didn't get enough of a 20-yard shot in the 84th minute that Nathu handled easily.
Although the Billikens only out-shot the Bearcats 3-to-2 in overtime, Saint Louis dominated the possession time by a wide margin. The Billikens consistently attacked, but their crispness began to dissipate as fatigue set in. UC's two overtime chances were both counter attacks that resulted in a pair of harmless 25-yard shots.
The Billikens stretched their unbeaten streak to eight, are 8-2-2 overall and are still the only unbeaten C-USA team with a 3-0-1 mark in league play, while Cincinnati is 5-7-1 and 3-2-1. The Billikens have Senior Night on Sat., Oct. 21, when they host Charlotte at 7 p.m.
