St. Louis - Charlotte handed eleventh-ranked Saint Louis University a 2-0 loss on Senior Night as the Billikens concluded their Conference USA regular-season home schedule tonight before 2,995 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. The loss snapped the Billikens' eight-game unbeaten streak.

"Time of possession doesn't win games," Billikens head coach Bob Warming said. "Their game plan was the same as Cincinnati's the other night which was keep everyone back and hope that they cash in a chance. Charlotte did that extremely well. We needed to be tough and aggressive attacking in the box, and we didn't get that done."

The Billikens, who played a scoreless tie with Cincinnati on Wednesday despite dominating the play, continued in that same fashion in the first half. Saint Louis out-shot the 49ers 6-to-1 in the first half with a 4-0 edge in corner kicks and had six solid scoring opportunities, but three outstanding saves by Charlotte keeper John McDonough kept the Bills at bay.

Billiken freshman standout Brad Davis and SLU leading scorer Jack Jewsbury were the most dangerous players on the field in the first half. McDonough made his best save of the match in the eighth minute when his diving stop at the near post dribbled just wide on Jewsbury's 15-yard drive. In the 21st minute, Davis had a 20-yard free kick from straight away that deflected off the Charlotte wall. McDonough made a point-blank save on Jewsbury from 10 yards in the 31st minute, and Davis scored on the rebound but was ruled to be offside. Davis had another 20-yard shot in the 36th minute that McDonough handled easily.

Charlotte survived an early second-half Saint Louis flurry as McDonough made a stop on Davis. David Beck's shot on the rebound was off the post and the 49ers defense cleared Beck's second attempt off its own line. The 49ers broke through on a counter attack at 50:10 on only their second shot of the match. Charlotte midfielder C.J. Robinson's crisp centering pass was tucked away by Juan Munoz-Airey from 10 yards past SLU keeper Paul Nagy.

Saint Louis bid to tie in the 67th minute on another flurry when a rebound rolled free to senior midfielder Vedad Alagic, but again McDonough stepped in front of his 18-yard blast.

The 49ers moved to a two-goal advantage at 70:36. Charlotte sophomore midfielder Rob Evits' cross deflected off a Billiken defender creating a shot for sophomore forward Chris Wargin. He popped it in from eight yards.

McDonough frustrated Jewsbury again in the 71st minute when he easily handled the sophomore striker's header off a serve from Davis. McDonough ended with nine saves on the night as the Billikens out-shot his 49ers 16-12. Nagy made six stops for the Bills.

The Billikens are 8-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in league play, while Charlotte is 7-6-2 and 5-2-1. Saint Louis finishes the regular season with three road matches. The Billikens travel to Marquette on Tue., Oct. 24, for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
