Soccer Bills Blank Akron in Preseason Opener

St. Louis, Mo. - Saint Louis University ninth-ranked men's soccer Billikens opened their exhibition season with a 1-0 shutout of Akron this afternoon at the IUPU-Fort Wayne Soccer Showcase. Senior midfielder Brian Hadican (St. Louis, Mo. / DeSmet) scored the lone goal to support the shutout goalkeeping of senior Paul Nagy (Grapevine, Texas / Grapevine).

Hadican netted the winner at 36:39 off a feed from fellow senior Vedad Alagic (St. Louis, Mo. /St. Mary's). Nagy made it stand up as he faced only three Akron shots and was forced to make only one save. The Billikens out-shot the Zips 12-3 and had a 4-to-2 edge in corner kicks.

"We possessed the ball well, but we need work in the final third," Billikens head coach Bob Warming said. "Overall, that was a pretty good outing against a quality opponent for our first game of the year."

Saint Louis faces South Carolina Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m. The Gamecocks blanked Notre Dame 2-0.

The Billikens open the regular season by hosting Vanderbilt on Fri., Sept. 1, at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
