No. 9 Billikens Get Cornell Early

NASHVILLE - Ninth-ranked Saint Louis University scored twice in the first eight minutes and handled Cornell 3-1 this afternoon at Vanderbilt's Pum Classic. Sophomore forward Jack Jewsbury scored a goal and assisted on another as the Billikens snapped a two-game losing streak.

"We came out with enthusiasm and intensity and won a match that we had to have," Billikens head coach Bob Warming said. "Cornell is a good team that passes the ball so well, and they gave us trouble in the second half. We did a good job of keeping their dangerous attackers at bay."

After struggling in the first half in the last two matches, Saint Louis jumped on top quickly at 1:35. Making his first career start, Jack Jewsbury. Reinhardt made no mistade from 10 yards.

Billiken freshman Brad Davis made it a two-goal game at 7:16 on a 20-yard free kick to the upper right corner. Davis almost made it a three-goal margin when he rang a 25-yard drive off the cross bar in the ninth minute.

Cornell halved the deficit at 24:16 on a penalty kick by midfielder Richard Stimpson. Saint Louis had just survived a scramble in front of its own net. The Bills attempted to clear a Big Red corner, but SLU defender Jason Cole was cited for a hand ball.

Saint Louis regained control in the waning moments of the half as Jewsbury scored from 15 yards at 43:56. Cole centered for Jewsbury, who beat Cornell keeper Doug Allan to the left corner.

The Billikens out-shot the Big Red, 8-to-7 as SLU keeper Paul Nagy made four saves to pick up the victory. Cole also cleared a ball off the Billikens' own line. Jewsbury, defender Joe Hammes and midfielder Mike Hill were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Billikens improved to 3-2-0, while Cornell is 2-2-0. Saint Louis returns home to face Southwest Missouri State on Sat., Sept. 23, at 7 p.m.
