St. Louis - Fifteenth-ranked Saint Louis University opened its Conference USA schedule tonight by blanking winless DePaul 4-0 before 1,797 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Billiken sophomore Jack Jewsbury scored twice and assisted on another goal as the Billikens won for the second time in three outings.
"We got enough done tonight to win, because we certainly weren't sharp," said Billikens head coach Bob Warming. "I thought we spent a lot of emotion in last Saturday's tie with Southwest Missouri State, and our guys are looking forward to this Saturday's UAB match with a great deal of anticipation."
Saint Louis started quickly as Jewsbury, the Bills' leading scorer, netted a five-yard header off a cross from freshman Andy Pusateri. Senior midfielder Vedad Alagic popped in his second goal of the year at 16:08. Sophomore defender Jason Cole played a ball to Alagic at the top of the DePaul penalty area, and the veteran drove it to the upper left corner past Blue Demons keeper Jash Chavero.
The Billikens' leading freshman scorer, Brad Davis, closed the first half scoring at 31:15. Jewsbury settled a long pass from the back and laid it off for Alagic, who found Davis moving forward outside of the Demons' area. Davis hammered a hooking 25-yard drive under the cross bar.
With Warming substituting freely in the second half, the Demons held Saint Louis to just a single tally as Jewsbury wrapped up the scoring at 83:22. Jewsbury fought off two defenders to reach a pass from midfielder Mike Hill and roofed a six-yard strike over Chavero.
Saint Louis out-shot the Blue Demons 10-to-4, and Billikens keeper John Politis had to make only one save to post the shutout. DePaul's Chavero made three saves.
The Billikens are 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in league play, while DePaul is 0-8-0 and 0-3-0. Saint Louis concludes its three-game homestand by hosting UAB on Sat., Sept. 30.
