St. Louis -
The Saint Louis University women's basketball team upset No. 20 Tulane 57-56 at Bauman-Eberhardt Center in a Confernce USA contest. Angie Lewis hit one free throw with 2:06 left to play for the winning point and the Billiken defense shutout Tulane the rest of the way. The victory was Saint Louis' first ever win over Tulane and just the second time the Billikens had defeated a ranked team.
Tulane took a 39-38 lead with 10:13 left to play in the game on a Teana McKiver layup. Angie Lewis quickly converted a layup as the Billikens broke the Green Wave's full-court trap. On the next Billiken possession, Lewis hit a short jumper for a 42-39 lead. Delacey Joseph then hit a long jumper from the top of the key to pull Tulane to 43-41. Kirsti Holloway hit consecutive 3-pointers as the Billikens took their largest lead of the game at 48-41 with 6:47 remaining in the game. Tulane went to full-court pressure and rallied to make it 50-48. The teams traded baskets but the Green Wave tied the game at 54-54 on a McKiver putback with 3:50 left in the game. After a Billiken turnover, Sarah Goree converted to give Tulane the lead at 56-54 with 3:29 to go. Amie Van Deurzen made a layup with 3:09 to boost the Billikens to a 56-56 tie.
Tulane looked inside but missed two layups and was called for a foul with 2:06 left in the game. Lewis hit one free throw to give the Billikens a 57-56 lead. Tulane missed on its next possession but the Bills missed a trey with just over one minute in the game. However, Tulane gave it right back on a turnover. Saint Louis bled the clock but missed again with 25 seconds to go in the game. Tulane's Kelly Nadeau got a good look at a three pointer with nine seconds left in the game, but the ball fell short. The ball rolled around with neither team able to track it down, until SLU's Star Jackson controlled snared the rebound at the buzzer.
Angie Lewis tallied 11 points to reach double-figures in scoring for the 14th straight time and grabbed seven rebounds. Teana McKiver poured in 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting to lead Tulane. Gwen Slaughter added seven points and hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds. The Green Wave outshot and outrebounded the Billikens, but committed 27 turnovers.
The Billikens win their second straight and improve to 9-7 overall, 2-1 in Conference USA. The Green Wave falls to 14-4, 2-1 in C-USA. Tulane had won the previous eight games in the series, including a narrow one-point win last season. The win over the No. 20 Green Wave was the first over a ranked team since the Billikens defeated No. 23 Memphis 73-72 back on Jan. 1, 1999.
