Angus' Free Kick Beats No. 13 Duquesne in OT

Pittsburgh - Freshman defender Calum Angus drilled a 25-yard free kick in overtime as Saint Louis topped 13th-ranked Duquesne 3-2 tonight in an Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer at Arthur J. Rooney Athletic Field. Fellow freshman Kyle Patterson had a goal and an assist as the Billikens stretched their winning streak to six to stay unbeaten in the A-10 and claim sole possession of first place in the league.

"It was a hard-fought, well-played game and we continued to battle against a tough, ranked team," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "At this stage of the season, this is a great road result for us, and hopefully, an indicator of things to come for us the rest of the way in the league race."

The Dukes entered the match ranked ninth nationally with a 0.57 goals against average, but the Bills jumped on top as A-10 scoring leader John DiRaimondo punched Patterson's rebound home in the 27th minute. On a scoring binge lately, DiRaimondo netted his seventh goal in his last five games. SLU carried the one-goal advantage to the half.

The Dukes knotted the game in the 62nd minute as sophomore midfielder Greg Annan found the back of the net off freshman defender Pat Flinn's corner kick. The Bills surged ahead once again in the 78th minute when Patterson bent an 18-yard drive that caromed in off the right post. Defender Mo Benne and freshman forward Larry Geraghty picked up assists.

Dukes scoring leader Steve Mellor tied the game again in the 81st minute as the Bills lost a tackle in the central midfield, and Duquesne quickly converted on a four-on-three advantage as sophomore midfielder Travis MacKenzie put Mellor in. But Angus ended the spirited match at 91:23 with a bending 25-yard drive that went over the Duquesne wall and found the lower left corner of the net.

The A-10's defending regular-season champion, Duquesne (10-3-0, 4-1-0) saw its five-game win skein snapped despite out-shooting the Billikens 14-6 and holding a 3-1 edge on corner kicks. Bills senior keeper Jeff Sackman made six saves to post his career high eighth win. Dukes keeper Zach Varga recorded three saves, but saw his streak of three consecutive shutouts broken.

Saint Louis (8-4-1, 5-0-0) continues its five-game A-10 road swing to conclude the regular season when the Bills visit George Washington and La Salle next weekend. SLU challenges the Colonials on Fri., Oct. 28, and visits the Explorers on Sun., Oct. 30.
